Types of Surrogacy

Types of Surrogacy

There are 2 main types of surrogacy. Gestational and Traditional Surrogacy.

Our Surrogates at Canadian Surrogacy Options Inc. are only Gestational Carriers.

Gestational Surrogacy

Gestational Surrogacy means that biologically, the Carrier, has no genetic link to the child. This can be done in one of several ways:

  • Mother’s Egg, Father’s Sperm
Example: This would be chosen if the biological Intended Mother was unable to carry for medical reasons but still had healthy eggs they can use for the embryo.
  • Donor Egg, Father’s sperm
Example: If there was a question about the egg quality of the Intended Mother, the Intended Mother doesn’t have her ovaries anymore or the Intended  Father is a single parent.
  • Mother’s Egg, Donor Sperm
Example: This would be chosen if the sperm quality of the Intended Father was questioned or the Intended Mother is a single parent.
  • Donor Egg, Donor Sperm
Example: This option would be chosen if both Intended Parents had medical or genetic concerns.

Traditional Surrogacy

In Traditional Surrogacy, the Carrier would be using her own egg and therefore, have a genetic link to the child. In this arrangement, the Surrogate agrees to be inseminated with the sperm of the Intended Father or chosen Sperm Donor. After the birth, the Surrogate agrees to terminate her parental rights, and the Intended Mother does a step-parent adoption.

While this is a very viable and more cost-effective option for many couples and individuals, Canadian Surrogacy Options Inc. does not assist with Traditional Surrogacy and cannot help you this this at this time.
