Surrogacy FAQs

Surrogacy FAQs

Recipient FAQs

Is surrogacy legal in Canada?

Yes! Surrogacy is legal in Canada provided that it is altruistic (unpaid) and the Surrogate is 21 years of age or older. Click here to read the full Assisted Human Reproduction Act.

Are surrogates doing this for the money?

NO!  In our experience, the women who approach us are truly doing this “out of the goodness of their heart”. The compensation that these women receive is not enough to “change their lifestyle”.

What would I look for in a “typical surrogate”?

Ideally a woman that already has children, who thoroughly enjoys being pregnant, and has a good understanding of the surrogacy process.

Should I worry that she will try and keep my baby?

NO! This person is helping you build your family. Generally she has already completed her family. No Surrogate of our knowledge has ever tried to keep the baby. Legal surrogacy contracts are also set in place to ensure this as well.

What is the most difficult part of the whole process?

From our past experience, it’s the “Contract Stage”. Most of the items everyone can get through quite easily, but no one likes to discuss the financial aspects. It is beneficial to sometimes to be able to have a neutral third-party involved to help resolve any issues that may arise during this part of the process.

What is the best part of the whole process?

By far, it is in the delivery room!

Prospective Surrogate FAQs

What if the Intended Parents change their mind, separate, or die?

This is all spelled out in the legal contract. Parents must name a guardian for their child in the case of a dispute or death.

What kind of medications will I be on?

Initially, you will be put on lupron, which will be used so that the doctor can “manipulate” your cycle to match up with the Intended Mother. Later in the cycle, you will be on estrace (pills) and progesterone (injections or suppositories).

Does everyone use the same lawyer?

No. You need your own lawyer to look out for just YOU, and your rights.

Does a Surrogate have any genetic link to the baby?

No! Our Surrogates are all Gestational Surrogates, meaning they do not have any genetic link to the child. Either the Intended Mother provides her egg or an Egg Donor is selected.

Does the Transfer hurt?

It might be slightly uncomfortable depending on who you are, but it shouldn’t cause pain. It is basically like a pap smear during your yearly exam.

What if an embryo transfer does not take?

Depending on what has been decided between the Surrogate and Intended Parents, as well as how many embryos they have, it’s not uncommon for multiple transfers before becoming pregnant.

Will my Intended Parents want to come to doctors appointments and be involved?

Absolutely! Most couples want to be able to attend all doctors appointments, and ultrasounds, with the ultimate being in the delivery room!

What kind of relationship should I expect after the birth with the Intended Parents?

This should be something that you discuss with the Intended Parents before and during the pregnancy. Sometimes a nice “Christmas Card” relationship is enough, along with a phone call or two throughout the year.

What if the Intended Parents change their mind and don’t take the baby?

We can assure you, that the Intended Parents working with CSO Inc. are VERY committed to having their family. To date, no one has “changed their mind”.
