Understanding the Types of Surrogacy

There are two main types of surrogacy: Gestational Surrogacy and Traditional Surrogacy. At Canadian Surrogacy Options, we’re here to help you understand the difference and support you every step of the way.

Gestational Surrogacy

In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate (also known as the gestational carrier) is not genetically related to the baby. The embryo is created using the egg and sperm of the intended parents or donors, then transferred to the surrogate through IVF.

  • Most common type of surrogacy in Canada
  • No genetic link to the surrogate
  • Offers legal clarity for intended parents

Traditional Surrogacy

In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate uses her own egg and is genetically related to the child. Insemination is typically done via IUI (intrauterine insemination).

  • Less common due to legal complexities
  • Surrogate has a genetic connection to the baby
  • May not be available in all provinces
